Head coach Brian Kelly announced on his radio show Thursday night that starting left tackle Tyree Adams recently underwent tightrope surgery on his injured ankle.

Adams injured his ankle against Vanderbilt last weekend. He had been listed as out on the Tigers’ official availability report, but there was some optimism that he could be back for the Alabama game on Nov. 8.

Against No. 3 Texas A&M on Saturday, Kelly said true freshman Carius Curne will start at left tackle.

Adams had started each of LSU’s first 7 games at left tackle. He played a season-low 15 snaps against Vanderbilt. Curne did not play against the Commodores. Instead, DJ Chester replaced Adams at left tackle.

Tightrope surgery recoveries vary. Kelly offered a 4-to-5-week timetable on Thursday night, adding that LSU would “maybe” have Adams back by “the end of the year.”

Curne started 1 other game earlier this season at right tackle, replacing Weston Davis against Ole Miss. Curne allowed 1 quarterback pressure in 41 pass-blocking snaps that day.

Saturday against Texas A&M will be his first action at left tackle, and it’ll be a different kind of challenge. Aggie edge Cashius Howell leads all SEC defenders in quarterback pressures this season with 32. Texas A&M’s 25 sacks in 7 games are the sixth-most in the FBS.

Kickoff against A&M is set for 7:30 p.m. ET on ABC.
