Brian Kelly and LSU athletic director Scott Woodward had a meeting on Sunday afternoon that got “very tense,” according to a report by The Athletic on Sunday.

LSU suffered its 3rd loss in 4 games in a national TV meltdown on Saturday night, when an 18-14 halftime lead quickly turned into a 49-18 rout when Texas A&M scored 35 unanswered points in the second half. The final score was 49-25 in a stunned and angry Death Valley, where most of the LSU fans who hung around until the end stayed to chant “Fire Kelly!” as he made his way off the field.

The Tigers dropped to 5-3 and 2-3 in the SEC, and 1 day after a horrible loss on the field, Brian Kelly and Woodward had those tense words in the Sunday meeting. According to The Athletic report, Woodward had suggested to Kelly that he make changes to his staff, specifically offensive coordinator Joe Sloan, who Woodward suggested firing. LSU’s offense currently ranks last in the SEC in rushing yards per game, and Woodward had reportedly seen enough.

According to the report, Woodward told Kelly to fire his play-caller, before Kelly vehemently answered that he was interested in making other moves to his staff that “Woodward wasn’t comfortable with.”

The meeting only got more tense from there, according to the report, as Kelly’s future with the program he has led since 2022 is in serious peril.

“It went bad fast,” an LSU source told The Athletic.
