The Cleveland Browns are expected to place former South Carolina standout Connor Shaw on IR later this week after the second-year quarterback sustained an injury to his thumb during Thursday’s preseason opener.
The hand injury will require surgery and Shaw will be out an extended period of time.
Shaw was competing for a roster spot alongside several quarterbacks.
“I feel for Connor because he has worked extremely hard,” said Browns head coach Mike Pettine, per a release. “He’s a competitor and has had a great offseason and a good camp so far. He is good for the quarterback room and it’s unfortunate that this injury won’t allow him to compete.”
