Broyles Award for nation’s top assistant goes to Michigan coach with SEC ties

The Football Writers Association of America and College Football Awards Association announced that former Alabama assistant, now Michigan offensive coordinator Josh Gattis, was named the 2021 Broyles Award winner.

The award is given to the best assistant coach of the year. Last year’s winner was Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian, who was the offensive coordinator for Alabama.
Gattis’ Michigan offense was one of the best offenses in the country scoring almost 40 points per game (37.7) and they averaged about 450 yards per game. His offense is one of the reasons the Wolverines find themselves in the College Football Playoff this year for the first time ever. If they beat Georgia on December 31, they will be playing for a national championship in January.
The Michigan-Georgia CFP semifinal matchup pits Gattis against Georgia’s Dan Lanning, a fellow finalist for the Broyles Award. Jeff Grimes (Baylor), Jim Knowles (Oklahoma State) and Warren Ruggiero (Wake Forest) were the other finalists.
Gattis has been in coaching since 2010. His SEC stops include Alabama (wide receivers coach, 2018) and Vanderbilt (wide receivers coach and offensive recruiting coordinator, 2012-13).
