New Auburn coach Bryan Harsin announced Wednesday his captains for the 2021 season.
While Harsin’s background comes on the offensive side of the ball, his players, who made the selections, opted for a pair of defenders as captains, with linebackers Owen Pappoe and Chandler Wooten getting the nod.
Harsin announced the move on social media: “The ultimate honor, being selected by their teammates.”
Congratulations to our 2021 season long Captains @TheFreak and @ItsMeWootang.

Of the 2, Pappoe was the more obvious pick. The 6-1, 226-pound junior from Lawrenceville, Georgia, is coming off a tremendous 2020 season in which he recorded 93 tackles, 6 tackles for loss, 4 sacks, and an interception.
Wooten’s selection, however, comes as a bit of a surprise, but it says quite a bit about what his teammates think about him as a player and a leader.
The 6-3, 232-pound senior opted out of the 2020 season due to COVID concerns but decided in the spring to return for a final year.
The Acworth, Georgia native has played in 30 career games for the Tigers, recording 45 tackles and an interception. His play in the camp this fall has the Tigers feeling like they will have one of the best linebacking corps in the SEC in 2021.
The Tigers open their 2021 season on Saturday, Sept. 4 at home against Akron.
