5-star QB signee Bryce Young discusses his goals for his freshman season at Alabama
Bryce Young arrived on campus in Tuscaloosa with a ton of hype but the fanfare isn’t going to carry any weight when it comes to impressing Nick Saban and Steve Sarkisian on the practice field.
Rated as the nation’s No. 2 overall prospect in the 2020 recruiting cycle, according to 247Sports Composite Rankings, Young has already enrolled in Tuscaloosa and will be participating in spring practice with the Crimson Tide.
While many have Mac Jones pegged as Tua Tagovailoa’s successor as Alabama’s starting quarterback, it would be unwise to rule out Young making a run at the job if he lives up to the hype this offseason and impresses the coaching staff and his teammates with his ability on the field.
During the recent Maxwell Football Club annual awards ceremony, Young shared his goals for his freshman season at Alabama.
“It’s just to carry out whatever the coaches want from me,” Young said at the event according to Paul Myerberg of USA TODAY. “I just want to maximize myself and listen to my coaches. Really, for me, it’s whatever the coaches ask of me. I’m just trying to get better and push myself to be the best I can. Just listen to the coaches. They’re not going to steer me wrong.”
Before he even pledged to play for Saban at Alabama, the California native was committed to stay home and play for USC.
What made Young change his mind?
“I felt that Alabama was the best fit for me,” Young answered. “It was somewhat difficult facing the fact that I’m not going to be going to school 20 minutes away from my house. But at the end of the day, I just wanted to do what was best. It wasn’t really too big of a deal. It was, for me, whatever I could do to put myself in the best position.”
It’s hard to argue with that logic as Alabama is run by arguably the greatest college coach of all time while USC’s leader can’t seem to stay off the hot seat long enough to recruit these days for the Trojans.
