Texas A&M is stepping up its commitment to basketball.

The Aggies are expected to officially announce the hiring of one of the best up and coming coaches in the country as Virginia Tech’s Buzz Williams is headed to College Station. According to one report, A&M is prepared to make Williams the second-highest paid coach in the Southeastern Conference by offering a contract worth at least $3.5 million annually.

Multiple reports indicate Williams recently met with his Virginia Tech team to inform them he is headed to Texas A&M while Matt Norlander of CBS Sports is reporting the Aggies will officially announce the hire with a press conference at 4 p.m. on Thursday.

Williams, a Texas native and former Aggie assistant coach, led Marquette to five NCAA Tournament appearances in his six seasons at the school, including three Sweet 16 appearances, one of which ended in an Elite Eight run. His record at Marquette was 139-69 before landing the Virginia Tech job in 2014. In Blacksburg, Williams went 100-69 overall with three NCAA Tournament appearances in this five seasons at the school, including one Sweet 16 run.

Texas A&M fired Billy Kennedy immediately after the Aggies were defeated in the 2019 SEC Tournament, which dropped the team to 14-19 on the season. Kennedy finished his career at Texas A&M with a 151-116 record.

Virginia Tech recently confirmed that Williams was leaving the school:
