Auburn right guard Calvin Ashley left the team’s scrimmage on Thursday with an injury and was taken to the hospital as a “precautionary measure,” Tigers coach Gus Malzahn told the media, including Justin Ferguson of The Athletic.

Malzahn said that the injury was either to Ashley’s head or neck, but that he didn’t have any more details at the time. He reiterated that sending Ashley to the hospital was precautionary.

According to AL.com’s Tom Green, Ashley had feeling and full movement in all of his extremities when he was taken to East Alabama Medical Center.

Ashley, a redshirt freshman who is listed at 6-foot-6, 322 pounds, is a former 5-star recruit from Orlando, Fla. He was listed second on the depth chart at right tackle last season, although he redshirted, and has now shifted over to guard.

Ashley is competing for the starting spot at right guard, and if the Tigers lose him for a substantial period of time, it would certainly be a blow to their depth on the offensive line.

It was Auburn’s first scrimmage of the fall, and Malzahn remained hopeful that Ashley will “be OK.”
