Cam Newton explains why he’d rather have NFL MVP than Super Bowl ring

Cam Newton made some interesting comments during a segment on ESPN’s First Take on Thursday.

Newton was asked by Stephen A. Smith if he would giving up the NFL MVP Award he won in exchange for a Super Bowl. Newton’s answer was surprising to many — including Smith.

Newton said he wouldn’t give up the NFL MVP for a Super Bowl, stating that the “impact” his career had in the league was more important. To explain his point, Newton named several quarterbacks who were less-prolific than he was but ended up winning a Super Bowl.

“What’s more important, impact or championships?” Newton said. “You look at a guy like Allen Iverson … everybody is not going to be Michael Jordan. Everybody is not gonna be Patrick Mahomes. Everybody is not gonna be these individuals who have the luxury of saying ‘Hey, I not only dominated this sport, but I also have championships to back it.’

“Let me remind you: Brad Johnson won a Super Bowl. Trent Dilfer won a Super Bowl. Respectuflly, Nick Foles won a Super Bowl. When you look at those guys and you say, ‘OK, what’s more important, would you have preferred to win a Super Bowl?’ I think that’s the humble approach. But if we’re being honest … to say everybody has a responsibility to do. And you can say as an MVP award winner or an All-American, you held your end of the bargain down. And that’s what it really comes down to for me. I know that’s not the popular pick … But my take is, I’m taking individual success because I did my job.”

Here’s a clip from Newton’s comments on First Take:

Newton isn’t necessarily speaking in hypotheticals — the former Auburn star won the NFL MVP Award in 2015 but never captured a Super Bowl Ring. His Carolina Panthers did get close once, but ultimately lost to the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl 50.
