The New England Patriots open the season against the Miami Dolphins on Sept. 12, and according to Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, Cam Newton will be the starting quarterback in that game.
While Belichick affirmed that Newton would be the team’s starter instead of rookie Mac Jones, he seemed to leave the door open for the potential for the former Alabama star to get the call right out of the gate. Newton played a pair of series in the Patriots’ 22-13 win over the Washington Football Team in their preseason opener, but Jones received the lion’s share of the snaps as he entered late in the 1st quarter and remained in before giving way to Brian Hoyer early in the 4th.
Newton himself noted that although Belichick has referred to him as “our starting quarterback”, the position is still up in the air and that he hasn’t been told his status specifically.
“Y’all sitting up here asking silly questions to me and I’m looking at y’all with the same thing,” he said on Monday. “I don’t know what y’all want me to say. You know, you know that. You know he hasn’t said that, so for you to just ask the question, it is what it is…
“I just want you guys to understand, everything y’all know, I know. There’s no hidden motives or things like that. I do know those things like that, I can’t worry about.”
