Brian Kelly’s record at LSU fell to 34-14 with a loss to Texas A&M in Week 9. That winning percentage (70.8%) is one a lot of college football teams would love to have, but it doesn’t fly with the Tigers, who fired Kelly on Sunday night.

In wake of the news, Cam Newton — via ESPN’s First Take — offered a word of advice to whoever follows in Kelly’s footsteps: if you don’t plan on doing everything in your power to win a national championship, they won’t let the door hit you when they boot you out.

“[This] is a warning for the next person that takes this job. You must understand, when you go to the top tier… of the SEC… as far as budget allocations… mediocrity, or mediocre coaching, will not be tolerated,” Newton said. “You must understand that. So, anybody who wants to insert their resume for a potential job interview… if you don’t have intentions to win, and I mean win yesterday, do not take that job.”

Newton believes Kelly’s “lackadaisical” demeanor didn’t fit LSU’s culture. He thinks the next person who coaches the Tigers must be “intentional” and needs to “win fast.”

The Bayou Bengals have won 3 national championships in the 2000s. They don’t expect to merely compete for a College Football Playoff berth each year; they expect to make it. As mentioned, if you’re not up to the challenge, they won’t waste time in trying to find someone who is. LSU is on bye in Week 10 and plays at Alabama in Week 11.
