Former Auburn star QB Cam Newton could see his career at a crossroads in Carolina as he deals with a foot injury that has sidelined him for much of the season. Now he’s reportedly elected for surgery to repair a Lisfranc injury to his left foot.

The Charlotte Observer reported the news, and added that Newton suffered the injury in the team’s third preseason game against the New England Patriots. He played the first 2 games of the regular season, both losses, but did not play again.

The Panthers placed him on injured reserve on Nov. 5, so the timing of this news raises questions about Newton’s prognosis and future with the team. Recovery from this surgery is reportedly 6 to 10 weeks, but even the owner, who fired Ron Rivera on Tuesday, didn’t have any insight into Newton’s situation.

“Hopefully Cam’s healthy, I frankly don’t know and neither does Cam right now,” David Tepper said.

However, if that recovery timeline is accurate, the Panthers would have plenty of time to know if he could be ready for the 2020 season.

Rivera, however, weighed in.

“Unfortunately at the end the injuries caught up to him a little bit, and I think now the uncertainty is going to be ironed out,” Rivera said. “He’ll come back and we’ll see what happens to him. But they were great. And I can really, truly say this, in my nine years the young man has been nothing but upfront with me, honest, supportive, caring. He’s been a great guy and I really did appreciate it.”
