Carson Beck on CFP semifinal win: ‘Best feeling I’ve ever had in my life’
Carson Beck transferred to Miami hoping to lead a team to a national championship.
Against Ole Miss in the Fiesta Bowl on Thursday night, he led his team to the doorstep of a title. Beck’s 3-yard touchdown run with just 18 seconds remaining in the College Football Playoff semifinal put the Hurricanes on top and eventually won them the game, 31-27.
“I don’t even know. It’s the best feeling I’ve ever had in my life,” Beck told ESPN’s Holly Rowe of his emotions afterward.
Beck had a turnover in the third quarter that ended a scoring threat when Miami had a chance to tighten the screws on Ole Miss. But he delivered late when it mattered most. Trailing 27-24 with just over 3 minutes to play, Beck drove Miami from its own 25-yard line to a game-winning touchdown.
“I told them we’ve got 3 minutes for the rest of our lives,” Beck said. “Nothing else matters. … We were able to drive it down and finish it.”
Miami had a 17-10 lead late in the second quarter. Ole Miss would score 9 unanswered throughout the third and the early part of the fourth to take a slim advantage.
After Miami went up 24-19 on a touchdown pass from Beck to Malachi Toney, Ole Miss answered again with a touchdown of its own and a 2-point conversion to go up 27-24.
“I’m so proud of this team. We never flinched. In the face of adversity, when we had to respond, we responded and we never gave up,” Beck said. “I looked at the guys on the sidelines and you could just see it in their eyes. We all had a good feeling that what just happened was about to happen.”
Beck finished with 268 yards and 2 touchdowns through the air. He completed 23 of his 37 passes with 1 interception.
