Five games into the Bill Belichick era, North Carolina has tumbled into a 2-3 record. The Tar Heels allowed 28 points in the first quarter of a 38-10 loss vs. visiting Clemson on Saturday.
The media scrutiny was already rising but it’s ratcheting up even more for the former NFL coach. CBS analyst Aaron Taylor believes North Carolina needs to fire Belichick and start over with a different rebuild.
“It is ludicrous that’s the product. Bill Belichick is not the right guy for this job. We’ve seen a bunch of NFL coaches come down and think that they’re going to create the 33rd NFL team. Do we all remember that?” Taylor said. “This product on both sides of the football is a reflection of what’s going on in that office. It’s just not good. They’ve got to figure something out. Bill Belichick was a mistake. It’s not the answer and they need to move on.”
The loss to Clemson was the ACC opener for North Carolina. Belichick got a rude awakening to the competition level in the conference, as even in a potential down year Clemson is still capable of results like that.
Belichick and North Carolina have a bye next week followed by a road matchup at Cal on Oct. 17 (10:30 p.m. ET/ESPN).
