Celebrity guest picker revealed for ESPN’s College GameDay at Oklahoma-Texas
Baker Mayfield will join the desk this weekend when ESPN’s College GameDay broadcasts live from the Cotton Bowl at the Texas State Fair.
The traveling pregame show will be in Dallas, Texas, for the annual Red River Rivalry between No. 12 Oklahoma and No. 3 Texas. Mayfield revealed on his Instagram page on Thursday that he has been selected as the celebrity guest picker for the week.
Mayfield, who currently leads the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFL, was an All-American at Oklahoma. He went 2-1 against the Longhorns in the Red River Rivalry.

Mayfield grew up in Austin, Texas, and played his high school ball at Lake Travis. Despite spending his early years in the Longhorns’ backyard, Mayfield claimed to be an Oklahoma fan. Yet as a recruit he was open to the idea of playing for Texas. Mayfield was a 3-star prospect whose offer list included just Rice, FAU, Washington State, and New Mexico. He told The Oklahoman when he was in school that he approached Texas about walking on, but didn’t feel like it would have been the right fit.
Instead, he walked on at Texas Tech and became the first freshman walk-on to start an opener. That first year, he threw for 2,315 yards and 12 touchdowns, starting seven times and winning the Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year award.
After the year, he transferred to Oklahoma. Mayfield sat out the 2014 season per transfer rules at the time, then had a 3-year run with the Sooners that earned him a Heisman Trophy and All-American honors.
Mayfield finished his career ranked second in FBS history in passing efficiency rating, third in yards per attempt (9.7), tied for fourth in touchdown passes (131), fifth in total offense (15,690 yards), and seventh in passing yards (14,607). In 2017, Mayfield won the Heisman and led Oklahoma to the College Football Playoff.
He was selected first overall in the 2018 NFL Draft.
GameDay begins on ESPN at 9 a.m. ET. The Red River Rivalry kicks off at noon ET on ABC with Chris Fowler, Kirk Herbstreit, and Holly Rowe on the call.
Derek Peterson does a bit of everything, not unlike Taysom Hill. He has covered Oklahoma, Nebraska, the Pac-12, and now delivers CFB-wide content.
