One of the biggest transfer portal additions that any team made this past winter was the Oklahoma Sooners adding former Washington State Cougars quarterback John Mateer.

Mateer, who was one of the most highly coveted prizes in the portal, chose to join the Sooners over several other top programs across the country, and figures to be one of the top passers in the SEC this season.

According to ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg, coaches who faced Mateer last season are already well aware of how good he is, and one of those former foes believes Mateer will be among the SEC’s elite in 2025.

He’s going to be one of the better quarterbacks in the SEC,” said the coach. “If he can stay healthy — because they run him like a running back — they’ll be a much better team. He’s the type of guy who can change your whole culture.

There’s no denying the elite potential Mateer possesses, as the junior 3,965 total yards and 44 total touchdowns in 2024 go along with the Cougs.

Now, he’ll be leading a far more talented offensive core with the Sooners in 2025 and will be looking to help get things back on track in Norman.
