With Lane Kiffin‘s departure for LSU all but official, the question is whether or not Ole Miss offensive coordinator Charlie Weis Jr. and defensive coordinator Pete Golding will follow him from Oxford to Baton Rouge.
According to Football Scoop’s John Brice, Weis won’t be sticking around and is set to join Kiffin’s initial LSU staff. Weis has been with Kiffin at Ole Miss since 2022 and, before that, was Kiffin’s OC at FAU in 2018 and 2019.
As for Golding? Multiple reports have him remaining in Oxford, specifically from CBS Sports’ John Talty and Matt Zenitz — with Zenitz reporting that Golding will be the interim head coach. As far as his candidacy for the permanent job? According to Brice, Golding “has all the key people in his corner” as “momentum” exists for that to occur. Golding has been with the Rebels program since 2023.
Kiffin’s pending departure has been far from a smooth one, to say the least. We know that he won’t coach the Rebels in their presumed College Football Playoff appearance. Now, what’s left is figuring out what his staff in Baton Rouge will look like.
If it doesn’t include Golding, there’s a chance it could include former Tigers Ed Orgeron in some form or fashion, though, as reports have suggested.
