The No. 6 Oklahoma Sooners are rolling into their Week 7 matchup against hated rival Texas with an undefeated 5-0 record and all the momentum in the world on their side.

They could also be getting their star quarterback, John Mateer, back for their pivotal showdown against the Longhorns as well, with ESPN insider Pete Thamel reporting that dual-threat gunslinger is pushing for a return this Saturday.

Mateer was knocked out of the Sooners’ Week 4 win against the Auburn Tigers with a hand injury and was forced to undergo surgery to repair a broken bone in his throwing hand.

Oklahoma had a bye right after the Auburn game, which helped mitigate Mateer’s absence a bit, but he was ultimately held out during the team’s Week 6 blowout win against Kent State.

His return for the Red River Rivalry would obviously be a massive boost for the Sooners as they look to reclaim the Golden Hat from Texas.

While Thamel’s report certainly stirred up some optimism among Oklahoma fans, head coach Brent Venables appeared to cast doubt on his star quarterback’s status for this Saturday on Monday night.

With so much riding on this pivotal Week 7 meeting between the longtime rivals, Mateer’s status for the game will be a massive storyline leading up to kickoff.
