The Oklahoma Sooners‘ hopes to earn a College Football Playoff berth may well hinge on the recovery ability of quarterback John Mateer, who underwent hand surgery earlier this week on a broken bone in his right hand.

Mateer posted to social media Thursday that the procedure performed by Dr. Steven Shin, one of the country’s leading hand/wrist surgeons, was a success.

And CBS Sports reporter Matt Zenitz added hope for the Sooners on Saturday – indicating the procedure went so well that the Heisman Trophy contender could return to action as early as Oct. 11 when Oklahoma takes on Texas in the annual Red River Rivalry.

A transfer from Washington State, Mateer had passed for 1,215 yards and 6 touchdowns against 3 interceptions for Oklahoma through 4 games in 2025. The 7th-ranked Sooners are off this week, and play at home against Kent State next Saturday (4 pm ET, SEC Network). Oklahoma coach Brent Venables has indicated that sophomore Michael Hawkins Jr. will start against the Golden Flashes.
