Everyone on this Earth is allowed their opinion. Some opinions are just… much less popular than others.
Dennis Dodd’s latest Heisman Watch fits into that category. The CBS writer ruffled a few feathers on social media Monday by including Texas A&M freshman QB Marcel Reed with the likes of Travis Hunter, Shedeur Sanders, Dillon Gabriel and Cam Ward.
Notably, Reed is ahead of Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty
Week 9 Heisman Watch
1. Travis Hunter, Colorado (career high 153 snaps)
2. Shedeur Sanders, Colorado (there’s more on this qb’s back than anyone in the country?)
3. Dillon Gabriel, Oregon (record breaker for the nation’s most complete team)
4. Cam Ward, Miami (no td passes for…— Dennis Dodd (@dennisdoddcbs) October 28, 2024
All respect to Marcel Reed, but he shouldn’t realistically be anywhere near a Heisman list at the moment. The dual-threat freshman has shown an excellent ability to score with his legs – he found the end zone 3 times on the ground against LSU – but he’s just not as skilled as a passer. Not yet. Reed has been effective as a backup because he’s so elusive and a true playmaker, but that doesn’t make him a Heisman-caliber player.
Especially not more than Jeanty, who is putting together one of the greatest seasons by a running back in college history. The Boise State RB has totaled just under 1,400 yards with 18 touchdowns rushing and one receiving. Sure, he’s not facing power conference competition week in and week out, but he was able to keep his production against Oregon, Washington State and UNLV, which is (was?) fighting for the G5 playoff spot alongside the Broncos.
What do you think of this list?
