CFP chair Mack Rhoades comments on Miami’s place in Playoff race
The ACC is the red-headed stepchild amongst the Power 4 conferences in the 2025 College Football Playoff rankings. It seems as if no ACC team wants to win the conference. And frankly, not many people outside of their respective fanbases would want an ACC team in the field if it weren’t essentially required.
Right now, Miami (7-2, 3-2 ACC) is No. 15 in the CFP rankings, but has claim of the No. 11 seed for the bracket as the highest-ranked ACC team (and de facto fourth highest-ranked conference champion). For the Hurricanes to have any shot at an at-large berth, CFP committee chair Mack Rhoades believes they need to perform steadily on offense the rest of the way.
“The conversation with Miami has been about their consistency, especially on offense. They’ve been really, really good on defense,” Rhoades said. “We’ve got great respect for Miami. When you think about the eye test… [they] need to be a little more consistent on offense.”
Miami is viewed as the best team in the ACC by ESPN’s Football Power Index. Despite this, the Hurricanes — who are currently seventh in the ACC standings — have the seventh-best odds (3.7%) of winning the ACC Championship.
They need a lot of help if they’re going to capture the ACC crown or sneak into the field as an at-large. For that potential assistance to matter, though, they must win their remaining regular-season games. They face the NC State Wolfpack this weekend at 3:30 p.m. ET (ESPN).
