CFP committee chair Rob Mullens explains decision to rank one-loss LSU over undefeated Notre Dame
The initial College Football Playoff rankings of the 2018 season were released on Tuesday, which can be viewed in full here, and seven SEC teams were ranked inside the CFP committee’s top 20.
Of course, it’s the top four that most fans concentrate on every week. Of note in the SEC, one-loss LSU debuted at No. 3 ahead of undefeated Notre Dame at No. 4.
What when into the decision to rank the Tigers over the Irish? College Football Playoff chair Rob Mullens was asked that question during ESPN’s one-hour Playoff poll reveal show.
“Well, there’s a lot of discussion on that, obviously,” Mullens said. “When you look at LSU’s resume, they have six wins over teams above .500 that include quality wins over Georgia and Mississippi State. They have a great resume. Their only loss was a close loss at Florida. Really impressed with their defense and overall their body of work was pretty strong.”
Based on what Mullen said there, look for the Tigers to jump to No. 1 if they manage to beat Alabama on Saturday night in Baton Rouge. If LSU takes down the Tide, that would only serve to make the best resume in the nation even better entering the second Playoff rankings.
