Chad Morris evaluates QB competition after first scrimmage: ‘Both of those guys did some good things’

Ty Storey and Cole Kelly each had their opportunity to lead Arkansas’ first-string offense on Saturday. And both quarterbacks made an impression on first-year Razorbacks coach Chad Morris.
While neither quarterback has been named the front-runner in the ongoing competition, Morris liked what he saw when both Storey and Kelly were on the field.
“They both led their team down the field, sustained some drives. A lot of situational stuff early in the scrimmage,” Morris said after the scrimmage. “I thought both of those guys did some good things. I wanted to see calmness, I wanted to see the same guy every day. But I was impressed with being able to see the guys live and see how they would respond, too. All those guys will keep pushing each other.”
Morris stated that he wanted to evaluate the quarterbacks’ mobility while running the offense, and he shared his thoughts on what he saw.
“I wanted to see how those guys were going to move around with everything coming in hot around them,” Morris said. “We feel like we’re in a position right now at quarterback that we could make those young guys live and see what they could do. I think you saw them create some plays with their legs and did some nice things.”
Kelley has more experience than Storey entering the season. Last year, when Austin Allen went down with an injury, Kelley started four games for Arkansas. However, Kelley is a sophomore and Storey is a junior.
