Former Missouri defensive end Charles Harris was selected No. 22 overall by the Miami Dolphins during the first round of the NFL Draft on Thursday night.
Every so often you’ll come across a prospect who hasn’t played a lot of football but is still an amazing talent. That’s Harris. In fact, Harris didn’t start playing football until his junior year of high school.
The Kansas City, Mo., native was rated as a 2-star prospect exiting high school, and now, he just became a first-round pick. He was rated as the country’s 3,153 overall player, and he obviously blew into a fantastic talent.
After redshirting in 2013, Harris had a solid freshman season, making 19 tackles and two sacks; however, his breakout season came in 2015. Harris racked up an SEC-leading 18.5 tackles-for-loss and seven sacks. He made 12 tackles for loss and nine sacks in 2016, and he was one of the brighter spots on the Tigers’ 4-8 team.
Although Harris is already an elite prospect, NFL scouts know that Harris has a high ceiling even from where he is right now. He’s a raw but talented defensive lineman who could have a long NFL career. If there’s one criticism about his game entering the NFL it’s that Harris will need to get tougher against the run than what he is right now.
Harris should be the latest Mizzou defensive lineman to contribute early.
