Charlie Condon was the first SEC player off the board in the 2024 MLB Draft, and he had plenty of company by the time the first round concluded late Sunday night.
The Colorado Rockies made the move to grab Condon with the No. 3 overall pick, making the star slugger the highest-drafted player in Georgia baseball history. Condon ends his career as a record-breaker, setting the single-season record for home runs in the BBCOR era with 37.
The SEC would go on to produce 7 first-round picks, including 4 players inside the top 10. That top-10 group included a trio of players with 30+ HRs this past season (Condon, Jac Caglianone and Christian Moore) and the top left-handed pitcher in the draft in Arkansas’ Hagen Smith.
Mississippi State pitcher Jurrangelo Cijntje also carved out his spot in history. He became the first switch pitcher ever to be selected in the first round of the 2024 MLB Draft.
Here is every SEC player taken in the first round Sunday night:
- No. 3 Colorado Rockies — Charlie Condon, OF/INF, Georgia
- No. 5 Chicago White Sox — Hagen Smith, LHP, Arkansas
- No. 6 Kansas City Royals — Jac Caglianone, LHP/1B, Florida
- No. 8 Los Angeles Angels — Christian Moore, 2B, Tennessee
- No. 12 Boston Red Sox — Braden Montgomery, OF, Texas A&M
- No. 15 Seattle Mariners — Jurrangelo Cijntje, P, Mississippi State
- No. 26 New York Yankees — Ben Hess, RHP, Alabama
