Zach Arnett had a tough challenge when he took over as head coach of Mississippi State last December.

The now-fired coach had to take over for the legendary Mike Leach after his sudden death last December. It’s something that a program almost never has to deal with, but Arnett stepped up to the challenge.

Chris Doering praised Arnett for his ability to guide Mississippi State this season, even if he didn’t post the best results.

“It’s a tough business, and everybody was celebrating Zach Arnett being the perfect fit and the perfect time and dealing with a unique challenge of having a sitting coach pass away the way that Mike Leach did in December of last year,” Doering said on College Sports on SirusXM. “Credit again to Zach Arnett for guiding them through a challenging tough time, but this has been a tough season for Mississippi State, especially given a lot of what they had coming back from last year’s team, especially on the defensive side.”

Arnett was fired Monday morning following a 4-6 start to the season and a blowout loss to Texas A&M on Saturday. Arnett went 5-6 in his time at Mississippi State, winning last year’s bowl game against Illinois.
