Tragic news to pass along this Saturday morning. Clemson has confirmed the passing of Tyshon Dye, a former Tigers running back who played on the 2016 national championship squad.

According to reports, Dye was visiting Richard B. Russell State Park in Elbert County, Georgia (near the South Carolina state line) with family on Friday. He was swimming and went under at around 4:50 p.m. when the family called for help. Search crews pulled his body from the water at 6 p.m. The coroner confirmed that Dye had drowned.

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney released a statement on Friday night.

“All of our hearts are just broken,” Swinney said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family. I can honestly say Tyshon Dye is one of the sweetest souls I’ve ever been associated with or coached. We’re just all heartbroken tonight, and we’re praying for his family and know that he’s been called home.”

A graduate of Elbert County Comprehensive High School, Dye joined Clemson in 2013 and redshirted that season. He appeared in 17 games for Clemson during the 2014-16 seasons, logging 76 career carries for 351 yards with five rushing touchdowns as well as two catches for 11 yards. After graduating in 2017, Dye transferred to East Carolina to finish his college football career. He was 25 years old.
