Much like Alabama, Clemson has brought in a former notable player to simulate the week’s opponent on the scout team.

The Tigers brought back former three-time All-ACC QB Tahj Boyd to simulate Alabama’s dual-threat QB Jalen Hurts on the scout team. Boyd also played Ohio State QB J.T. Barrett prior to last week’s 31-0 blowout over the Buckeyes.

“That rule’s really helped us. No question,” Tigers defensive coordinator Brett Venables said (via AL.com).

The rule that allows schools to do this is the NCAA’s bylaw 14.2.1.6, which says, “A former student at the certifying institution (e.g., former student-athlete) may participate in an organized practice session on an occasional basis, provided the institution does not publicize the participation of the former student at any time before the practice session.”

The Crimson Tide have used former players Trent Richardson, John Parker Wilson and Blake Sims on the scout team, too.

While at Clemson, Boyd racked up some eye-popping numbers. He threw for 11,904 yards and 107 passing touchdowns, while adding 1,165 yards and 26 rushing touchdowns.

While Jalen Hurts has had a incredible season leading Alabama, the Tide’s offense has to start faster. And starting faster includes getting Hurts off to a fast start and hitting some big passes down the field. That will have to happen under new OC Steve Sarkisian, too. It’s a new game-day voice that Hurts isn’t necessarily familiar with, but things can’t be much more of a struggle than last week’s game against Washington.

The most impressive thing about Hurts is his cool demeanor. While last game against the Huskies — and other games — was frustrating for him, he stayed cool and focused. Hurts’ cool demeanor helps his players stay cool, too, and not get frustrated when things aren’t working right.
