Former five-star Nick Chubb held off on committing to Georgia in 2013 so that he could make two “last-minute” visits to South Carolina, the Heisman candidate confirmed Tuesday in prep for Saturday’s game against the Gamecocks.

Chubb says he wasn’t able to meet Steve Spurrier on either trip to Columbia since the Head Ball Coach had prior obligations.

“I think he was getting some kind of award at Florida,” Chubb said. “I would’ve got to meet the head coach. That would’ve been great to know who I was gonna play for. But I probably would’ve come to Georgia.”

Spurrier was given the “Great Floridian Award” from Governor Rick Scott during Chubb’s second visit and didn’t have a chance to speak with one of the nation’s top players.

South Carolina’s 2014 signing class was ranked inside the Top 20 nationally according to 247Sports’ Composite rankings, but didn’t include a running back.

Few considered the Gamecocks a realistic threat to land the Cedartown, Georgia native, but chatting with Spurrier about his future role in the offense may have at least sparked Chubb’s curiosity.

The bruising running back rushed for 1,547 yards as a true freshman at Georgia and has surpassed the 100-yard mark in 10 straight games, the most since Herschel Walker.
