Eleven coaches can say they’ve won the SEC Championship Game in the 23-year history of the event that began at Legion Field in Birmingham, and has been played at the Georgia Dome since 1994.
Alabama coach Nick Saban made history last month when he passed Steve Spurrier with six wins in the game.
The only school that has won the game at least twice, and appeared in it at least five times without a coach winning more than once is Auburn. The Tigers split their three titles among three coaches — Tommy Tuberville, Gene Chizik and Gus Malzahn.
The list speaks to a combination of a coach’s longevity at a school and the talent base around them. While many of the title runs began in the 1990s, the top seven teams in appearances have all played in the game since 2006.
While the East went on a six-game winning streak in the ’90s, the West has won seven straight, the longest streak in the game’s history. The West is 13-11 in the game. Fittingly given those numbers, Florida (7) and Alabama (6) have the most wins in the game, but have also delivered four losses each to one another.
