Cole Cubelic reveals post-Week 3 takeaways for each SEC team

SEC analyst Cole Cubelic took to X Monday morning for his weekly SEC takeaways following a good Week 3 for the conference. Six SEC programs are within the top 7 of the latest AP Poll: Texas, Georgia, Alabama, Ole Miss, Tennessee and Missouri. Only Ohio State joins the SEC horde following Week 3.
The week was highlighted by out of conference wins by Missouri and Alabama. The Tigers struggled early against Boston College but were able to pull away late for a 27-21 win. Alabama dominated Wisconsin from the jump, silencing a few naysayers from their so-so performance against USF in Week 2.
Perhaps most notably, Cubelic called South Carolina’s loss to LSU “gut-wrenching,” especially on defense. The Gamecocks were on the verge of an absolutely massive win, but at times they simply failed to get out of their own way. Regardless, Cubelic loved the effort he saw from the Gamecocks and had more positive to say than negative.
He indicated that he is most disappointed in Mississippi State and Florida, of course. The Gators looked really bad against Texas A&M, who played its backup QB (though he performed very well). Mississippi State looked considerably worse and lost at home to Toledo… by 24.
Here’s a look at Cubelic’s full list of takeaways:
ARKANSAS: Battled back & held on for a W. Played a team that gives you a LOT. With a veteran QB. 22 is the real deal, freaking hammer. He wasted no time getting to the LOS. QB just stared down the INT. Missed some layups. Made good reads in run game. Consistency just not there…

FLORIDA: Ugly one. Could not stop penetration in run game. Plays seem to be consistently too long developing. 15 fine but couldn’t consistently get in rythm. Missed a few up the seams. Not enough down the field. 2 didn’t seem comfy. Feet were a mess. Arm angles all over the…

KENTUCKY: Liked the plan on off. Stretch play, quick game. Move the QB. He had some throws down the field, couldn’t connect. Can’t put the ball on the ground vs that group. OL held up better than I thought but QB still took too many hits. OL/TE confusion hurt protection. Too many…

MISSISSIPPI STATE: Gonna be tough to beat anyone with double digit flags & multiple turnovers. 28 pass attempts & can’t get QB to the ground. Let easy completions go to too many extra yards. Pursuit wasn’t great. WB run hurt them. Didn’t win contested catches. Thought 5 played…

OKLAHOMA: Solid win. QB sharp. Added more runs. Going to need it moving fwd, he can create explosives. Like moving pocket early & setting up quick throws. RBs out of backfield. So good in quick game, deliberate, confident, accurate. Seems to rush some things after that. 87 just…

SOUTH CAROLINA: Gut wrenching loss. I have not seen another defense in college football that hauls ass like that group did Saturday. DL disrupted. 5 was on a mission. 4 put his body on the line. 18 flying around. Gave up some underneath throws & missed a few tackles. Mostly got…

TEXAS: Good win. Offense smooth. Worked perimeter early. North/south runs followed. Backs but head down & got tough yards. OL not super clean but good effort. Missed some opportunities in space. Strained but still want to see more push. Couple breakdowns in pass pro. 85 was…

VANDERBILT: Give them credit for battling back. Down 12 basically headed to the 4th. Put themselves in position to win. Couldn’t hold on. Run game not consistent. 28 never got going. Did get a big score late. Big game for 9. Legit weapon. 2 did some great things. Went fumble,…
