The start of Arch Manning’s tenure as the starting quarterback of the Texas Longhorns got off to a less-than-ideal start this past Saturday as he struggled greatly against an elite Ohio State defense during the Longhorns’ Week 1 loss.

Manning was the subject of an immense amount of pre-season hype and was even the odds-on favorite to take home the Heisman Trophy at kickoff on Saturday, but those odds have since plummeted in the wake of his performance last Saturday.

The conversation surrounding Manning has likewise shifted in a pretty drastic way since Saturday, with many analysts and fans wondering whether or not the hype was too much, too soon.

Colin Cowherd and Nick Wright sounded off on Arch’s performance in Week 1 on Wednesday’s episode of The Herd, and Wright drew some interesting comparisons to recent QBs who had similar hype during their first seasons.

“Caleb Williams, the first time he ever played college football as a true freshman,” Wright said. “Gets dropped into the Red River Shootout, down two scores, and cooks. Trevor Lawrence, as a true freshman, goes undefeated and beats Alabama in the National Championship game. Those guys had this type of hype and immediately backed it up. I do think we can write him (Arch) off on this year’s Heisman trophy.”

Wright’s analysis here may be a bit harsh, but these types of comparisons are constantly being made when it comes to guys who are viewed as generational players coming into the college ranks.

Manning stumbled out of the gates, but now he’ll have to prove both Wright and everybody else who is doubting him wrong moving forward.
