Through 4:05 of his college football debut, Bill Belichick was back on top of the world. His North Carolina Tar Heels were up 7-0 versus the TCU Horned Frogs on the back of what Skip Bayless deemed a “national championship OFFENSE.” Then… the bottom fell out.

Over the next 55:55, TCU waxed North Carolina. The Horned Frogs outscored the Tar Heels 48-7 the rest of the way. Sonny Dykes’ defense actually put more touchdowns on the board (2) than Belichick’s offense (1). That’s where Colin Cowherd’s concern lies for Belichick and Co. moving forward.

Cowherd addressed Belichick’s debut during The Herd on Tuesday. He blasted Belichick’s archaic style and claimed the six-time Super Bowl champion’s younger self would boot this 73-year-old version out the door.

“Young Bill Belichick would have fired this Bill Belichick,” Cowherd said. “After the first drive, [UNC] went six drives without completing a pass… the game has changed. You have to take offense seriously. Belichick has become the chef that won’t change the menu… he doesn’t take offense seriously enough.”

The New England Patriots struggled offensively under Belichick after Tom Brady’s departure. The team ranked top 10 in scoring offense just once in four years post-Brady. New England twice ranked bottom-six in the category over the same stretch.

Unfortunately, Belichick’s problem may not have a quick resolution. The quarterback woes that plagued his final years in Foxborough may have followed him to Chapel Hill. If Gio Lopez or Max Johnson can’t consistently orchestrate the attack outside of garbage time, it will be a long campaign. UNC’s first chance at redemption comes Saturday against the Charlotte 49ers (7:00 p.m. E.T.).
