Colin Hitschler lands new coaching job after leaving Alabama, per report
Colin Hitschler has landed on his feet after he was reportedly fired by Kalen DeBoer and Alabama last month.
ESPN’s Pete Thamel reports that Hitschler will be the defensive coordinator at James Madison in 2025. He was Alabama’s co-defensive coordinator for the 2024 campaign.
As Thamel notes, Hitschler previously worked for current James Madison coach Bob Chesney at Division III Salve Regina more than a decade ago.
Hitschler spent just 1 season in Tuscaloosa before being let go. He previously worked under Luke Fickell at both Cincinnati and Wisconsin. In addition to his co-defensive coordinator responsibilities, he was also Alabama’s safeties coach in 2024.
At this time, it’s unclear who will take Hitschler’s spot on Alabama’s coaching staff. The Tide’s other co-defensive coordinator for 2024, Maurice Linguist, is currently expected to be back next season. Alabama did previously announce the hiring of Jason Jones as an assistant defensive backs coach.
Alabama will be looking to take a big step forward on defense in 2025. The Crimson Tide were a bit inconsistent that side of the ball in Year 1 under DeBoer as they allowed 4.72 yards per play. Alabama ranked 9th in the SEC in rushing average allowed as well at 3.68 yards per carry.
