College football player had piece of ear ‘ripped off’ in Week 1 game, coach reveals

It’s safe to say Portland State had the roughest Week 1 of the 2023 college football season. The Vikings lost to Oregon 81-7, and had a player lose a piece of his ear in the process.
Portland State coach Bruce Barnum revealed the injury in a recent radio interview. John Canzano shared the audio in a social media post.
“We had one guy get his ear ripped off,” Barnum said. “They sewed it back on. And now they say he has a concussion. So he’s out. But I think he’s fine. He talked to me today.”
Barnum added some important details after the initial shocking reveal.
“Not the whole ear. But partial ear detachment,” the coach said. “I think it’s from when he got his helmet knocked off. And I think his ear didn’t come out of his helmet.”
Portland State is an FCS program that competes in the Big Sky Conference. The Vikings have a trip to Wyoming up next on the schedule. Hopefully, the unnamed player will be back in action soon.
