College football player killed, NFL Draft pick injured in Kansas shooting

Awful news to pass along this Sunday. A shooting in Topeka, Kansas has left a college football player dead and an NFL Draft pick injured.
WIBW reports that Washburn University has confirmed the death of Dwane Simmons. The junior defensive back was 23. Former Washburn player, Corey Ballentine, was also injured in the shooting. Hours earlier, Ballentine was selected by the New York Giants with the No. 180 overall pick in Round 6 of this weekend’s NFL Draft. Ballentine’s injuries are described as non-life threatening and he is expected to make a full recovery.
Investigators told WIBW officers responded around 12:45 a.m. Sunday to the 1400 block of 13th Street on reports of gunfire. An officer on the scene said that Simmons died in the street from a gunshot wound.
