College Football Playoff to reportedly remain with current format, not add a spring version for postponed conferences

As college football plans to move forward with a handful of conferences, the traditional format of recent years looks to be largely intact.
That means that if the Big Ten and Pac-12, and other conferences that have chosen to postpone this season, play in the spring, there won’t be an additional trophy for them to play for, such as a second College Football Playoff.
That report comes from Dennis Dodd of CBS Sports, who said the CFP will be the crowning achievement this fall for the six conferences and 76 schools intending to play. Those include teams from the ACC, Big 12, SEC, American, Conference USA, Sun Belt, and a few independents.
Dodd reported that it’s unclear how it would even work if a second playoff was added this spring. That committee source was asked about two playoffs, one each after fall 2020 and spring 2021.
“We made the decision,” a member of the CFP College Football Management Committee told CBS Sports. “We’re moving forward with the plan as originally scheduled (to play this fall).”
Another member of the committee suggested no such decision had been made. Neither committee member wished to be identified because of the sensitivity of the situation.
“These are unusual times. There could be unusual outcomes,” the first committee member said. “But right now, we’re on the path that has been laid out previously.”
