College football programs can demonstrate a quick trigger, but Division II Lock Haven in Pennsylvania has taken it to a new level. On Thursday, the university announced that it had parted ways with head coach John Kelling.

Lock Haven won Kelling’s debut, 20-0, over Lincoln on Sept. 4. However, it ended the year on a 10-game losing streak, allowing 50 or more points 5 times while giving up 75 points to nationally-ranked Shepherd at home on Oct. 9.

“The decision was made after carefully evaluating the current status of the LHU football program and to move the team in a new direction,” a statement read.

Kelling was hired in Jan. 2020, but the Bald Eagles took last season off due to COVID-19. He joined the program from Frostburg State in Maryland, where he was the defensive coordinator.

Along with Kelling, offensive coordinator and offensive line coach Chris Sprague was also fired. Sprague re-joined the program in 2019 following 3 seasons at Delaware State.
