After the Labor Day holiday weekend giving TV networks the opportunity for an extended college football kickoff weekend, fans had to wait an extra couple days for the new rankings to drop.

On Tuesday, new editions of the Associated Press Top 25 and the Coaches Poll dropped. With five ranked teams (all five were ranked in both polls) losing, there was plenty of anticipation to see how far the losers would fall and who would move up or into new spots.

Two of the five teams – Texas and Florida State – were bounced from both polls. The other three – Washington, Miami and Michigan – managed to remain ranked, but dropped. Texas was ranked below No. 20 in both Week 1 polls (No. 23 AP, No. 21 Coaches) before losing to unranked Maryland 29-34. Florida State had been No. 19 in both polls before falling to No. 20/No. 17 Virginia Tech  3-24 Monday night at home.

To fill the open spots created by UT and FSU’s departures, writers and coaches alike turned to SEC teams. In both polls, South Carolina and Florida occupy the final two spots. It’s worth noting that in the preseason edition of each poll, the Gamecocks and Gators were the two teams that received the most votes among those outside the top 25. It appears both the coaches and writers were satisfied by South Carolina’s 49-15 win against Coastal Carolina and Florida’s 53-6 victory over Charleston Southern to promote both teams to the Top 25.
