When the updated college football rankings come out today, we can expect a few teams to make decent moves up and down in the poll.
Will LSU jump anyone ahead of the Tigers as a result of the impressive road win at Texas? Will Michigan get penalized for the close call against Army? Where LSU ends up in the updated college football rankings will be one of the more talked about items going into week 3. Rece Davis (an AP voter) said on the broadcast that he would consider LSU as a no. 1 or no. 2 ranked team in the new rankings.
Texas will likely fall a few slots as a result of losing to LSU, but perhaps not too much since LSU is a highly ranked team.
Texas A&M, due to the Aggies loss to Clemson, will likely move down to the 17-20 range in the top 25.
Nebraska will fall out of the top 25 due to its loss against Colorado, and Syracuse will likely fall out of the top 25 due to its 43 point loss to unranked Maryland.
Maryland may jump into the top 25 with another dominating performance two weeks into the season.
Featured Game Recaps:
LSU vs. Texas
The game had a fairly slow start offensively with some goal line woes on the Texas side, but the game kicked into high gear in the 2nd quarter. After a 3-0 score to finish the first quarter, LSU rattled off 17 points in the 2nd quarter while Texas added one as well.
Joe Burrow was surgical for much of the game making impressive throws all over the field and making plays on occasion with his legs when necessary.
The Texas offense came alive in the second half with consecutive touchdown drives in the third quarter. But the Texas defense could not stop Joe Burrow and the new look LSU offense down the stretch. Both teams were impressive at times, but Joe Burrow and the talented LSU team gets the huge win on the road against a top ten team that puts the LSU Tigers firmly in the early Playoff race.
LSU 45, Texas 38
Texas A&M vs. Clemson
It wasn’t necessarily a dominating performance by the Clemson Tigers, but the game never really felt in doubt. The Aggies, despite keeping it close for a decent part of the first half were not able to score after the initial field goal until a late game touchdown.
Trevor Lawrence wasn’t perfect, but he was good and he showed why he’s one of the best quarterbacks in the game. Lawrence threw for 268 yards on 24/35 passing. He threw for one touchdown and one interception. Travis Etienne was great as usual even with only 53 rushing yards.
Texas A&M’s Kellen Mond was iffy for much of the game. He threw for 236 yards on 24 of 42 passing. Mond failed to duplicate his breakout performance in the 2018 Clemson game where he lit up the Clemson defense all night.
While the game finished 24-10, the game wasn’t even that close. Texas A&M was able to put a score in the end zone with a few seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. The late score did however result in a Texas A&M cover of the 16-17 point spread swinging untold amounts of money in Vegas sportsbooks from a Clemson cover to a last second Texas A&M cover.
Final score: Clemson 24, Texas A&M 10
As we look ahead to the week 3 action in college football, there are some major games to get ready for. There are a number of SEC conference games including Alabama vs. South Carolina and Florida vs. Kentucky.
Ranked matchups include UCF vs. Stanford and Iowa vs. Iowa State.
