Phil Steele is considered a college football guru as one of the sport’s leading analysts. In addition to publishing the leading preseason preview, Steele continues to provide analysis during the season, including insight from the smartest folks in the desert.
Steele has published weekly Vegas Power Ratings since his ESPN days. Now independent, Steele maintains connections with sportsbook handicappers at multiple Las Vegas casinos and shares the power rankings on his own website.
According to Steele, the difference in two teams’ Vegas Ratings offers the projected betting line for a neutral-field meeting. These rankings are different from the AP Top 25 and don’t always reflect prior results on the field. Steele points to Alabama’s 20-19 win over Texas in Week 2 as an example:
Alabama barely got past Texas by 1 and was basically outplayed in the game. If the two met again on a neutral field, Bama would be a 17 point favorite.
Here’s where each SEC team ranks entering Week 6:
-
- No. 1 Alabama (137.12 Vegas Rating)
- No. 3 Georgia (134.28)
- No. 7 Tennessee (123.33)
