Season-opening suspensions are nothing new in college football. Off-the-field offseason missteps like rule violations and academic issues tend to result in players missing the first game of the season. Injuries also happen before teams play a game. Now, with COVID-19 quarantines, players will be out for another reason. Combine all three, and the absences can pile up.
Georgia Southern will be without 33 players for its season-opener against Campbell. The list of players was widely shared on Twitter. A team spokesperson for the Eagles told ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg that not all players are out due to COVID-19, but some because of injury, suspension or coach’s discretion.

Georgia Southern hosts the Campbell Fighting Camels at 3:30 p.m. ET Saturday.
The Eagles went 7-6 in 2019, making the Cure Bowl.
