Power 5 commissioners met Thursday and according to analyst and Athletic senior writer Nicole Auerbach, there’s optimism that the College Football Playoff expansion, originally slated for 2026, can be implemented sooner.
Of course, there’s still a along way to go.
The commissioners just wrapped up their CFP meeting today. There’s optimism that they can get the 12-team CFP implemented before 2026, but it’s a lot of venue/schedule/contract issues to resolve still.

Expansion in general is a much debated topic. Many believe 12 teams are too much, some wish the playoff would stay at 4. Heck, there are some who want to see it expand to upwards of 20 or more.
One thing is certain, college football of today is going to be different by at least 2026. And if commissioners want to move it up, they’ll find a way to implement it sooner.
It’s worth noting that certain bowl games have contracts through 2025, changing that, among others, would take… some doing.
CFP executive director Bill Hancock described the issues related to calendar, venues and media partners as “chicken or the egg” issues. Says they all need to be worked out in concert.
