Conner Weigman’s shoulder still isn’t right, and so it was a pretty easy decision for Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko to hold out his starting quarterback for the 2nd week in a row on Saturday night against Bowling Green.

The sophomore signal-caller didn’t even dress for the Week 4 matchup.

“We didn’t want to give him the shot,” explained Elko. “He is dealing with the pain of that shoulder. We are trying to get him to the point of throwing comfortably.”

Weigman is continuing to recover from a sprained AC joint in his right throwing shoulder, an injury he suffered in Week 2 against McNeese. Weigman played through the injury in the 52-10 victory, throwing for 125 yards and 2 touchdowns without an interception.

But the injury didn’t progress to where Elko wanted it to, and so Weigman was kept out of the Week 3 SEC opener at Florida. With Weigman on the sideline, redshirt freshman backup quarterback Marcel Reed got the start and looked good in a victory over the Gators. Reed threw for 178 yards and 2 TDs in the 33-20 win at The Swamp.

Then Elko made the decision to sit Weigman again against Bowling Green. Reed got the start again and was sharp again, throwing for 173 yards and 2 touchdowns in the 26-20 victory while not throwing an interception for the 2nd straight week.

The 25th-ranked Aggies improved to 3-1 on Saturday night while Weigman sat, and now the quarterback focus will shift to Week 5, when Texas A&M faces Arkansas in the Southwest Classic in Arlington, Texas.
