Scott Woodward issues statement after the SEC postpones LSU-Alabama game
The weekend slate in the Southeastern Conference just took a big hit as the league has announced Alabama’s upcoming trip to LSU has been postponed due to a COVID outbreak among the football program in Baton Rouge.
At this point, no official makeup date has been set for this game. LSU has already had one game postponed (at Florida) and is scheduled to play the Gators on Dec. 12.
Here is the official statement released by SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey following the news:
“While it is unfortunate to have multiple postponements in the same week, we began the season with the understanding interruptions to the schedule were possible and we have remained focused throughout the season on the health of everyone around our programs. We must remain vigilant, within our programs and in our communities, to prevent the spread of the virus and to manage activities that contribute to these interruptions.”
Following the news, LSU Director of Athletics Scott Woodward also issued a statement:
“Based on the number of student-athletes unavailable due to positive tests, contact tracing, and non-COVID injuries, we will not have the minimum number of scholarship players necessary to play on Saturday. We are disappointed there will be no football in Tiger Stadium this weekend, but we will always prioritize the health and wellness of our student-athletes. We will continue to follow the league’s protocols in order to safely and responsibly return to play.”
The SEC will continue to work on a way to make this game happen but if Alabama advances to the 2020 SEC Championship Game on Dec. 19, there doesn’t appear to be an open date available to fit this game in at the moment.
The league has said “the opportunity to reschedule the Alabama at LSU game will need to be evaluated” in the statement it released on Tuesday.
