Cowboys great Michael Irvin says Dak Prescott is owed ‘back pay’

As the NFL offseason moves forward, the Dallas Cowboys have still yet to come to a long-term agreement with star quarterback Dak Prescott.
This past week, Cowboys great Michael Irvin appeared on The Rich Eisen Show and shared his thoughts on the ongoing back-and-forth between Prescott and the Cowboys. In Irvin’s opinion, Prescott’s new deal should make up for getting the former Mississipi State standout at a bargain. As the No. 135 pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, Prescott made just over $2 million last season after earning $630,000 in 2018, $540,000 in 2017 and $450,000 during his rookie season.
“Dak has been not great, but perfect,” Irvin told Eisen. “Not necessarily in wins and losses, of course. But I’m talking about just the person that he’s been. The kind of investment you want to make, the kind of guy you say ‘yeah, we hit it with this guy. We got him in the fourth round.’ You stole four years, so whatever he gets he deserves because you still owe him back pay.”
Currently, Prescott is set to make over $30 million next season on the franchise tag. According to reports, the Cowboys have sought to sign the former Bulldog to a 5-year contract while Prescott prefers a 4-year deal. Irvin believes the two parties will eventually reach a deal.
“Dak has done everything and he has won,” Irvin said on Eisen’s show. “He has won a lot of football games in his first four years. So to say he doesn’t deserve the money isn’t totally correct. He does deserve the money. That’s the market and he’s a starting, winning quarterback in the NFL. It’s just a matter of getting it done. And I think they’ll get it done.
“It’s business. Dak wants every penny and Jerry [Jones] wants to try to save every penny. But usually those kinds of deals, I always tell people, will get done as soon as the slipper falls of Cinderella, 12:01, something will get done.
