Dabo Swinney announced Sunday that a Clemson tight end will miss time to begin the season after a DUI arrest.
TigerNet.com was the first to report that Ian Schieffelin was arrested this weekend on suspicion of DUI. A team spokesperson provided a statement from Swinney to TigerNet:
We aware of Ian Schieffelin’s arrest on suspicion of DUI. Clemson Athletics has a clear policy by which we will abide, so Ian will miss some competition to start this season as a consequence. We’re obviously very disappointed by the situation, but we are very thankful no others were involved and no one was hurt.
A Grayson (Georgia) High School product, Schieffelin is listed at 6-7, 260 pounds on the Clemson roster. He’s a graduate student in his final year of eligibility, but this is his first season with Swinney’s program after spending 4 seasons with the Clemson basketball team.
On the hardwood, Schieffelin played in 134 career games with 99 starts, including starting all 70 of the program’s games across his final 2 seasons. He earned All-ACC recognition as a senior, posting career highs in minutes per game (33.4), points per game (12.4), rebounds per game (9.4) and assists per game (2.7).
Swinney’s commitment to Schieffelin is notable considering No. 4 Clemson hosts No. 9 LSU to begin the season. The Tigers then play Troy in Week 2 before beginning conference play at Georgia Tech in Week 3.
