Dabo Swinney fires back at critics: ‘If Clemson is tired of winning, send me on my way’

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney made some interesting comments at his weekly press conference on Tuesday.

Pressure is mounting for Swinney despite more than a decade of sustained success at Clemson. The Tigers have struggled more in recent years than they did at the height of the Swinney era when players like Trevor Lawrence and Deshaun Watson were leading the way.

Now, after a 1-2 start, Swinney appears to be feeling more heat from inside his own fan base and program.

“If they want me gone, if they’re tired of winning, they can send me on the way,” Swinney said. “Because that’s all we’ve done is win. So if they’re tired of winning … we’ve won this league 8 out of the last 10 years. Is that good? I’m just asking, is that good? I don’t know if that’s good or not, to win your league 8 out of 10 years, to go to the Playoff 7 out of 10 years. To be in 4 national championships, win it twice.

“If Clemson is tired of winning, send me on my way. But I’m going to go somewhere else and coach. I ain’t going to the beach. Hell, I’m 55. I’ve got a long way to go. Y’all are going to have to deal with me for awhile. I’ve got a long way to go. I’m just getting going. I’m just now good enough to be a head coach.”

Here’s a clip of Swinney’s comments:

Clemson and Swinney will hope to bounce back this week with a win over Syracuse.
