Dabo Swinney gives hilarious Steve Spurrier impression while recounting decade-old voice mail

Dabo Swinney met with reporters on Tuesday afternoon to preview the Tigers’ 2024 season-opener against Georgia.

However, as happens sometimes with Swinney, things got off script a bit. Swinney was speaking about his relationship with legendary head coach Steve Spurrier when he launched into a remarkable impression of the Head Ball Coach.

Specifically, Swinney re-enacted a voice mail he received from Spurrier in 2014 following a tough Week 1. Clemson lost to Georgia 45-21 in that contest while Spurrier’s South Carolina team lost 52-28 to Texas A&M.

“”He’s just like, ‘I don’t know why we schedule these games,” Swinney said in a Spurrier-esque pitch. “I tell ya, I just don’t know. We go play team over here down the road, get a little win, everybody’s happy. Get to work out some of them problems, cause you know there’s gonna be some problems. Yeah, I don’t know why we schedule these games like this right out of the gate.

“‘But hey, just callin’ ya. Looked like y’all got your ass kicked for 1 quarter. We got our’s kicked for 4 quarters. But just wanted to tell you, hey, keep your head up, you know. Long season ahead. We’ll keep moving.'”

Here’s video of Swinney’s impression:

With Clemson set to face Georgia in Week 1 again this week, Swinney will have to hope that things go better this time. Kickoff for that game is set for 12 p.m. ET on Saturday afternoon.
