Dakereon Joyner, who has been used primarily as a wide receiver, became South Carolina’s fourth starting quarterback of the 2021 season, and he helped deliver a Duke’s Mayo Bowl win over North Carolina 38-21.

Joyner finished 9-of-9 for 160 yards and 1 touchdown, and he also added 10 carries for 64 yards. Running back Kevin Harris also had 31 carries for 182 yards and 1 touchdown.

Due to Joyner’s big game, he was named the Mayo Bowl MVP. He was overcome with emotion after the win.

South Carolina created some great momentum heading into the offseason on the heels of the bowl victory.

The Gamecocks quarterback competition for 2022 should be very interesting. Most expect Oklahoma transfer Spencer Rattler to win the job; however, after Thursday’s win, it’s fair to wonder if Joyner will have a say in the competition.
